Attic ventilation provides year-round benefits; by adding comfort, protecting against damage to your homes structure, and significantly reducing energy consumption.

BENEFITS OF PROPER VENTILATION

  • Ventilation helps dissipate unwanted moisture year round.

  • A well-ventilated attic offers protection from premature aging of roofing materials.

  • Adequate ventilation creates a positive flow of air that allows the attic to breathe and helps prevent mold, mildew and moisture damage.

Heat Build Up

Effective attic air circulation is accomplished by incorporating both exhaust and intake vents in your attic.  Exhaust vents allow attic air to escape.  Intake vents allow fresh air to enter your attic space (not your living space).  For maximum circulation, adding a powered exhaust fan will significantly improve the air flow by sucking stagnant air out of your attic and replacing it with fresh air that it pulls in through available intake vents.

In the summer, when temperatures are high, heat builds up in your attic space.  Without good insulation and proper ventilation heat can penetrate into living areas causing your cooling system to work harder and consume more energy.   Good insulation is one component in the battle to minimize heat penetration.  Proper air circulation is another very important component.

In cooler weather months during rain and snow seasons, proper circulation prevents moisture from building up in your attic.  If left un-addressed, moisture can wreak havoc on your home structure including your attic flooring, wall joists, and roof sheathing resulting in thousands of dollars in repair costs.

Good air circulation during wet, humid periods will also prevent mold and mildew build up that otherwise could  effect internal air quality.  Mold and mildew spores can be a significant contributor to respiratory ailments and allergies.
